a study sheds light on how the virus is transmitted

United Kingdom, Spain, United States… The monkeypox virus continues to gain ground in the four corners of the planet. Nearly 1,500 cases have been confirmed in France according to the latest situation update from Public Health France (SPF). On a global scale, theWorld Health Organization (WHO) counts a total of 6,000 cases infected with the disease in 58 countries.

Faced with the spread of this new virus, scientists have tried to understand its mode of transmission in a recent study published on July 21, 2022 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The latter found that the majority of infected cases contracted the virus during sexual contact.

This is probably one of the largest studies conducted to date. English scientists from Queen Mary University of London (UK) studied data from more than 520 cases infected with the monkeypox virus between April and June in 16 different countries.

Results ? The researchers observed that 98% of the cases studied contracted the virus during sexual contact. But that’s not all: in the study, the majority of those infected were gay or bisexual, with a median age of 38. Only 13% of patients were hospitalized and no deaths were recorded.
