After an emergency rescue in Saint-Raphaël, 50 cats and kittens seek foster families

They don’t come from Cheshire like Alice in Wonderland but they all hope for a caring home to live in peace. A nice flock of tomcats, more than fifty, were spending happy days on their master’s vast property. Felines particularly comfortable and fulfilled in the field since several females are waiting to give birth in the coming weeks. But now the unfortunate Raphaëlois, victim of a sudden death, left them without resources. The family of the deceased, finding themselves very helpless in the face of so many hairballs, contacted associations concerned with animal welfare.

The president of Riviera’s pets, Kimberley Deloffre, went there to assess the surprising situation last Sunday. “We are about thirty volunteers who, since the creation of the association in 2018, have been helping pets, strays, abandoned or mistreated. The population reports problems to us and we seek to take care of the animals in order to shelter. We negotiate with the owners. If there is no way out, we put them face to face with their responsibilities, we file a complaint and we call in the police”.

More than 4,000 euros to sterilize

“But the vast majority of the time, we discuss and find common ground with the masters and if they have financial problems, we help them with food or care, continues the president. In some cases, the masters allow themselves to be overtaken, as is the case in Saint-Raphaël where a man, who certainly loved his cats very much since they are well fed, let them proliferate. There are over 50 cats, strays that have joined this group and many unborn kittens, a well-established colony. It is the number that is problematic. All must be sterilized and several require care. Some are injured, one kitten has a gouged out eye and needs surgery.”

Help in the rescue

All this has a cost and not the least: more than 4,000 euros are needed to sterilize the cats. Not to mention veterinary care for many of them. “The owner’s family has donated 1,000 euros to the association and we are hoping for help from the Raphaël municipality so that these cats do not breed again, adds Kimberley Deloffre. We open a kitty because we need donations, in money or in kind, croquettes, equipment. We are also actively looking for families to adopt cats or to receive them for a while.”

The volunteers therefore first dealt with the emergency. “We picked up the future mothers and the sick cats. Fifteen of them are currently at the vet. We intervened from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. Sunday to capture 37 cats. Nathalie Oudot of the association ” My city, my animals” came to reinforce Riviera’s Pets. The “Adopt me” association (Nice) took nine cats, “Les Chats Libre Azuréens” (Cannes) took four, “La vie plus belle” (Pegomas) five and “Rien que pour lui” (Carros) two. . We need to get back to the field to complete this rescue, entrusts this enthusiast. We really need foster families to offer a peaceful life again to these cats to be socialized or for pregnant mothers to be safe with their babies”.
