The current situation

For months now, many SEOs and webmasters have been complaining that the indexing of their pages is getting much slower than before. On some sites, you may have to wait several weeks for Google to be able to index certain URLs (when there is indexing), without having any particular technical problems.

The problem of indexing is therefore more and more recurrent, and many tools are emerging to try to provide a solution.

Not to be confused with other issues

Be careful not to fall into the trap: the reason for the non-indexing of content can sometimes be logical and have a real technical origin.

Know how to wait

First of all, it is possible that Google has not yet discovered your content, and sometimes it is enough to give it time for it to do so (a few hours or a few days in general). This is particularly the case when a very large number of contents are published at once, for example when launching a site or when redesigning an existing site. This is also the case on “young” sites with little or no popularity.

So keep in mind that sometimes it takes search engines a bit longer to index each URL.

Be careful though: as a general rule, if after a few days to 2-3 weeks you still have no indexation, you may need to act.

Second possibility: you may have crawl issues on your site. Sometimes search engines do not know your content, or they discover your URLs but cannot properly go to them and understand the content. And without an effective crawl from a search engine, you won’t get indexed. Likewise, it can sometimes crawl your pages but not index them due to incorrect or incomplete technical elements.

On these points, the sources of the problem can be multiple:

  • Blocking robots via the robots.txt file;
  • Request for non-indexing via the noindex meta robots tag (or via the equivalent X-robots-tag HTTP headers);
  • Error in the code of your pages (HTML);
  • Bad canonical tags;
  • Bad hreflang markup;
  • Loading time too long;
  • Errors in schema.org markup;
  • URLs that you have manually requested to be deleted in your Search Console;
  • Duplicate content on another URL;
  • Too abrupt server protection (for example with Google IPs that would be blacklisted);
  • Use of Javascript platform almost systematically increasing the crawl time;
  • etc

Do not hesitate to do a technical analysis of your URLs to see if the blocking of indexing would not be linked to one of these points.

Penalties

More blocking point, the domain name could suffer a penalty, and this for multiple reasons: fake incoming links, hacked site, DMCA complaints, etc.

Go to the dedicated menu of the Search Console “Security and Manual Actions” to check if no message is present there.
