Big fright for a 51-year-old fisherman who, after being bitten by a shark, was rescued by helicopter and saved in extremis.
The story could have ended in a bloodbath. Fortunately, thanks to the good sense of those present and the speed of intervention of the emergency services, 51-year-old fisherman’s life could be saved. The man, who was on his fishing boat with his team off the Bimini Islands, between Florida and the Bahamas, was savagely bitten in the arm by a shark. If the latter failed to drag its prey to the bottom of the ocean with it, the fisherman found himself seriously injured and in mortal danger because of the amount of blood he was losing rapidly. After the attack, one of the crew members who was on the boat called for help and someone also placed a tourniquet on the victim in an attempt to slow the flow of blood from the injury.
After being warned and determined that the man required an immediate evacuation, the USCG – the United States Coast Guard – from the base in Miami quickly arrived at the scene of the helicopter attack. One of the rescuers descended on the boat where he was able to take care of the injured and hoist him up before taking him to the Jackson Memorial, one of the hospitals in Miami. The rescue team has filmed the whole operation which she then posted on her Twitter account. The video shows that a splint was placed on the arm that was bitten by the shark in addition to a bandage to prevent him from bleeding too much. One of the coastguard officers spoke on Facebook about this successful intervention.
The victim is in stable condition
“It was the best possible scenario in the face of a clearly terrifying situation. The victim was lucky to have crew members who were able to provide first aid while waiting for the Coast Guard to arrive. This allowed them to quickly evacuate the injuredand then rushing him to the hospital. According to CNN, the man is in stable condition. The rapid reaction of the men who were with him and the intervention of the emergency services prevented the story from ending in a much bloodier way than it could have. In 2021 according to the International Shark Attack File, 137 people have been bitten by sharks in the USA.
