Covid: vaccinated children would be twice as well protected as others against the Omicron variant

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which depends on the Department of Health, revealed on Tuesday the results of a study on the effectiveness of vaccines against the Omicron variant of Covid-19 on children. from 5 to 11 years old.

According to an American study, during the wave Omicronthe hospitalization rate of children vaccinated against Covid-19 aged 5 to 11 years was half that of unvaccinated children of the same age.

In this age group, UNITED STATESthe hospitalization rate for children not vaccinated against Covid-19 was 19.1 per 100,000 between mid-December 2021 and end of February 2022 against 9.2 per 100,000 for vaccinated children.

Also according to this study, 87% of the 397 children hospitalized after contracting Covid-19 during this period were not vaccinated, while 19% of them were admitted to intensive care.

The highly contagious Omicron variant has exploded cases of contamination on the planet, particularly in Europe and North America. In the United States, this wave has caused an increase in hospitalizations due to Covid-19 among those under the age of 18, raising concerns about the impact of the virus in unvaccinated children.

The United States Medicines Agency had approved the use of the vaccine from Pfizer for children aged 5 to 11 on October 29, before the start of the Omicron wave.

According to CDC data, only 28% of children in this age group, or about 8 million people, are fully immunized.

The study does not specify whether these results are valid for the Omicron sub-variants including BA.2, currently the majority in France.
