Trained and educated for a year to be able to intervene in the event of hostage-taking or attacks, the GIGN dogs are an integral part of the intervention group.
Like Nitrate, of the Malinois breed, fifteen dogs are part of the GIGN brigade. Thanks to a very good sense of smell and with drastic training, these dogs meet three objectives: assaults, search for explosives and reconnaissance. Thanks to this great versatility, they are essential links within the group. Equipped with a helmet and a camera, the animals can be sent as scouts on perilous missions.
A whole year is needed to educate the dogs. The apprehension and understanding of certain words are mandatory so that the animals can understand the instructions and information given by their masters. Very often, words belonging to foreign languages are used. It can even happen that the gendarmes invent words in order to make themselves understood. Dogs should be both sociable, but always ready to attack.
