Migration from classic Hangouts to Google Chat

After falling behind on this project, Google will finally migrate the classic version of Hangouts to Google Chat for Google Workspace customers.

Starting March 22, 2022, we’ll enable the “Preferred Chat” setting for all customers who haven’t already, making Google Chat the default chat app.

What changes for users?

It is important to understand that this final phase of migrating from classic Hangouts to Google Chat only affects paid users of Google Workspace, but does not affect personal use of Hangouts with a simple Google account.

Other important points to highlight:

  • If Google Workspace users want to go to classic Hangouts via Gmail (web) or via the mobile app, they will be redirected to Google Chat.
  • For those who will be reluctant to this redirect to Chat, Google explicitly states: “ it is not possible to refuse this change. »
  • If you wish, you can export your data from the classic version of Hangouts and Chat: Google offers a help page dedicated to exporting data for your company.
  • The firm specifies that will still continue to operate but the Android and iOS applications will be deactivated.
