Despite the many restrictions linked to Covid, the tourism sector is resuming all over the world, and so has the segment of mapping applications, which have returned to their pre-crisis level, with more than 2 billion downloads in the second half of 2021.

“In particular, we can see a sharp drop in travel app downloads in the first four months of 2021, when the Delta variant hit the hardest. Indeed, overall monthly app and browser downloads increased from 322 million in January 2020 to 181 million in April 2021. A recovery followed from summer 2021 through the end of the year, with a peak of 347 million monthly downloads in October 2021. But the chart then trended lower as fears surrounding the Omnicron variant seemed to put the brakes on things once again. The number of post-pandemic downloads remains relatively high: 1.95 billion for the second half of 2021 compared to 2.08 billion in the second half of 2019,” explains

According to the company, this segment is largely dominated by Google, which places 3 of its applications in the top 5 places, with Google Maps (1st), Waze (3rd) and Google Earth (4th). Thanks to a 37% rebound in its carpooling activity, Uber ranks 2nd in the ranking, while occupies 5th place, and airBnb 8th.
