A few days ago, a decision by the Montpellier administrative court caused a lot of ink to flow in the media when One Voice managed to suspend pigeon hunting in Aude.
This decision has raised the anger of woodpigeon hunters as well as that of farmers who suffer the damage caused to crops. The order allowing wood pigeon hunting to continue during the month of March was overturned because One Voice believed that there was no hard scientific evidence to justify placing the wood pigeon on the ESOD species list.
The Montpellier administrative court ruled in favor of the animal association, allowing it to win a symbolic victory over a hunt that brings together a very large number of enthusiasts and does not suggest a bright future for hunting, which has been attacked from all sides since the prohibition of traditional hunts.
However, hunters and farmers are undeterred and have mobilized to express their dissatisfaction. The presidents of the Fédération des chasseurs and the FDSEA were received at the beginning of the week by the advisers of the Minister for Ecological Transition in order to convey their messages.
In response to the issues presented, Barbara Pompili’s advisers would have been very attentive and would have even offered help in compiling the file allowing the wood pigeon to be reclassified as a pest in the department in 2023.
Many local elected officials have also renewed their confidence in the department’s hunters and farmers, assuring them of a ” unwavering support […] in favor of the harmful classification of the pigeon”.
For their part, farmers and their representatives are tired of being put in the way when they know how to manage their territories perfectly, so they denounce ” the overflow of constraints imposed by environmentalist associations that prevent us from living in our territories”.
In response to this year’s ban, a demonstration will be organized jointly between farmers and hunters.
