It’s proven: women sleep better with a dog next to them

Marilyn Monroe used to sing “diamonds are a woman’s best friend”, well it seems she had it all wrong. According to a study published in “Journal of the International Society of Anthrozoology” it would rather be the dog. Why ? Certainly they are loyal and give love, but they also help to sleep better and it’s science that says it! Researchers surveyed nearly 1,000 women in the United States to examine the relationship between sleep and pet ownership. They found that sleeping next to another person or even a cat disrupts sleep while dogs are the least likely to wake us up. “Compared to humans, dogs that sleep in the owner’s bed are perceived to be less disruptive to sleep and are associated with stronger feelings of comfort and security,” the scientists wrote in the paper.

A routine story

But that’s not all: researchers have found that women who own a dog tend to go to bed and get up earlier. The reason ? It could quite simply be linked to the strict routine that they must adopt with the animal: the hours of walks, the hours when they have to feed… However, it has been proven that the key to good sleep is go to bed early enough and get up at the same time every day, between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Finally, some women find that having a dog in the room when they sleep brings a sense of security. “Owners of a dog find comfort in the idea that he can alert them to an emergency or if there is an intruder in the house. A cat is a little less likely to do this,” said one of the scientists behind the study, Christy L. Hoffman, to the American version of “HuffPost”. Science, a good reason to let the dog sleep in the bedroom!
