According to the Portuguese newspaper Recordthe Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) considered that Lille was “solidarity responsible” payment of compensation to Sporting CP in the case of the unilateral termination of Rafael Leão. Trained at Sporting, the player terminated his contract with the Portuguese club to join Lille in August 2018.
The CAS initially sentenced the 22-year-old Portuguese to pay 16.5 million euros to the Lisbon club in March 2020, a conviction confirmed by the Lisbon Court of Appeal last January. But ultimately the body based in Switzerland considers this Monday that the Mastiffs are responsible for the payment of compensation in the amount of approximately 20 million euros with interest. Leão, who now plays for AC Milan, reacted to the decision on Twitter.
