Disney + is broadcasting from this Wednesday, May 11, a series devoted to the death of Malik Oussekine, in 1986. A drama for the relatives of the young man, who were able to count on a famous lawyer to defend them, as reported by Le Parisien on 25 last March.

The facts date back to December 6, 1986 when Malik Oussekine, only 22 years old, returned from a jazz concert. Pursued in the lobby of his building by the police, he was beaten with truncheons and died of his injuries in hospital a few hours later. His death will have serious repercussions and important consequences for his family. To defend them, they called on a famous lawyer, as Le Parisien explained on March 25. It is George Kiejman. He is the son of Alter Kiejzman, craftsman, and Brandla Czarnecka, both Jews from Poland. He was sworn to the Paris Bar in December 1953 and has, over the years, defended many personalities known to the general public, including Richard Malka in 2007 or even Roman Polanski in 2008. It was in 1987 that he was approached by those close to Malik Oussekine in order to defend him. A case that has been adapted by Disney + and will soon be available on the platform.

In December 1986, France was shaken by student demonstrations against the Devaquet law, which concerned university reform. One evening, when he was just returning home, Malik Oussekine was chased before being beaten up by the police. Transferred to Cochin hospital, the young man died at 3:20 a.m. following a cardiac arrest. He suffered in particular from a periauricular hematoma, a suborbital hematoma and a fracture of the nasal septum, proof of the violence of the blows against him. The next day, when his death was announced, Interior Minister Charles Pasqua and his minister, Robert Pandraud, did not condemn the police action. “The death of a young man is always regrettable, but I am a father, and if I had a son on dialysis, I would prevent him from fooling around in the night.“, he said in the columns of the world. Words that quickly outraged the students who immediately wanted to pay tribute to Malik Oussekine by going out into the streets. The young man also became the new symbol of the fight against police violence and the Minister Delegate Alain Devaquet presented his resignation and renounced his reform.

Death of Malik Oussekine: have the police been convicted?

On the last day of the Series Mania festival, the first episode of the series aired. As reported by thee Parisian, relatives of the young man testified. “Demonstrations were not his style“, confided one of his brothers. There is also his sister, Sarah, who mentioned a “generous and brilliant young man, sure of himself and deeply French “. For Antoine Chevrollier, who created this series, the goal was to be “as close as possible to reality and Malik’s intimacy” and to tell his story. Concerning the police officers at the origin of this murder, the brigadier-chief Jean Schmitt and the peacekeeper Christophe Garcia were condemned, on January 27, 1990 to a symbolic sentence: five and two years suspended prison sentence.
