Puncher in front of the eternal, Julian Alaphlippe is linked to Poggio. Every year since 2017, we were sure to see him rise up on the pedals in the ultimate ascent of Milan-Sanremo. We will have to do without it in 2022. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, his team, revealed that he was suffering from bronchitis and that he would therefore not be at the start of the race this Saturday. The Frenchman therefore draws a line under the first goal of his season.

Bronchitis for Alaphilippe

This new hitch confirms a shy start to the season for Julian Alaphilippe who has not yet won. Actor of the Drôme Classic, he took fifth place before falling heavily on the Strade Bianche. During Tirreno-Adriatico, his preparatory race for Milan-Sanremo, he mainly focused on making efforts, either by going in a breakaway, or by working for Remco Evenepoel, official leader of the “Wolfpack”. It is finally a bronchitis which will oblige him to make the impasse. Unless there is a change in the calendar or a new glitch, we should see it on the Tour of the Basque Country in early April before the Ardennes with Liège-Bastogne-Liège as the high point. “Sad to leave the team,” wrote Julian Alaphilippe on Twitter.

Milan-Sanremo is a test that we loveassures the sporting director Davide Bramati in the press release. We are always happy to play it but we know that we have less chance of winning it this year without Julian. We wish him a speedy and full recovery..” Without the double world champion, Quick-Step should bet on its sprinter Fabio Jakobsen. Around him, Davide Ballerini could slip into a small group just like Florian Sénéchal or Zdenek Stybar.
