Rare violence against a dog was sentenced on Friday, October 14, 2022 at the court in Nanterre in Hauts-de-Seine. A man appeared in court accused of gross abuse and cruelty on an animal. The defendant had cut the throat of his dog. He was sentenced to a term of 18 months in prison, 12 of which are suspended, carried out under the semi-freedom regime.

Permanent ban on owning an animal

In addition to the prison sentence, the man was sentenced a permanent ban on owning an animal. It is also prohibited to practice a profession related to animals for a period of five years.

A revealing camera

The facts go back a few weeks. The police discovered the body of a dog with traces of several wounds made with a knife. The investigators then went back to the defendant.

According to the foundation’s lawyer 30 million friendsa civil party in this case, it is a camera present in the individual’s home that would have made it possible to prove his guilt.

Unknown to the police

“He literally lost his way with the animal. As well as cutting his throat, he stabbed him several times,” Me Caroline Lanty said. The defendant was not known to the police, but had previously committed violence against other animals.

During the hearing, the public prosecutor asked for a verdict on 20 months imprisonment against the accused, of which five were suspended. For this type of offence, the maximum penalty is five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros.
