OL overthrown by Juventus in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League

Seven-time winner of the Women’s Champions League, OL are in great danger in this 2021-22 edition. Visiting Turin this Wednesday in the quarter-finals first leg, the Lyonnaises were overthrown by Juventus after leading to the score (1-2). They will have to win by at least two goals in the return match, on March 31 in Lyon.

Everything changed on the hour mark when, on an innocuous clearance from the Italian defense, Ellie Carpenter misjudged the rebound of the ball and hooked Valentina Cernoia who was spinning on goal before being sent off (62nd). Saved by the bar at first while still leading in the score (64th), OL gave in on a missed aerial intervention by Sarah Bouhaddi which benefited Cristiana Girelli (71st). The ball seemed to have crossed the touchline before the center of Matilde Lundorf but the VAR validated the Turin equalizer. Stunned and much more feverish than in the past, Sonia Bompastor’s players definitely sank on a flash goal from Agnese Bonfantini (83rd).

Les Fenottes will be able to harbor regrets. First because they were leading thanks to the quick opener from Catarina Macario (7th) but, above all, because they had not conceded anything before this red card. They should have taken cover earlier, but Macario missed the mark at the penalty spot (31st) and Melvine Malard was flagged offside (43rd).
