“Onyx changed my life” according to Manon, 17

“Before, I took the cane and put it on a coat rack. Onyx is a living being: I feed her, I take her out, I take care of her. Before, I couldn’t take the bus to go to high school, now, yes, I’m less afraid of people’s eyes, my movement is more fluid. With the cane, we are tense, we have to concentrate, but with Onyx, I am more focused on the environment than on the journey itself. And then in the street, the children no longer say “oh mum, what is that stick” but rather “oh, look at the dog, he’s too handsome”, so I stop, I explain to them, it creates dialogue. »

“I am much more independent”

For the young woman, everything has changed, including in her school: “In high school, the person who helps me was waiting for me downstairs, I did everything by arm, now I do everything with the dog who, like I know the route. I give him the orders. I take it out during recess or during meals. “Thanks to her animal, the young woman has gained enormously in autonomy: “I do everything, on my own. I go to my locker, to the classrooms, to my physiotherapist, buy food, meet friends… It has changed my life, I am much more independent. »

Such a practical change in the way of getting around. The cane is a special technique, you have to think about cars, the journey, etc. “With the dog, we mainly think of the environment, the mental load is less important”, details the young woman.

“With Onyx, it’s easier with others”

“Onyx has changed my life. I feel less alone. It’s easier with others. Some didn’t dare come to see me, others were ashamed… Now I can go out with more people. »

Manon is very mature and leads a practically ordinary life. When she knows her dog won’t stand the noise, she doesn’t take it. “There are situations where you have to take your cane. There are limits, you can’t do anything. »

Next year, Manon, who works with a Braille computer, will go to Lyon. And it is thanks to Onyx that she will be able to go there independently. If she initially wanted to be a lawyer in international law, she may redirect herself to a profession that allows her to reconcile her private life and her professional life, such as perhaps the business world, but perhaps she will continue she says: “Even if it’s not easy, you always have to try. Make it a strength, not a hindrance. »
