Practice Insurance. Mandatory, is third-party insurance sufficient? What options should you add?

To be able to drive, French law requires all owners of a motor vehicle to take out insurance including a “civil liability” guarantee. Compulsory minimum, the “third party” insurance constitutes a basic cover.

If you do not find this insurance sufficiently protective, you can choose more extensive guarantees: the more expensive “all risks” guarantee, an “extended third party” formula or take out, in addition to the “third party”, optional guarantees such as the theft or glass breakage.

To choose your level of insurance, think about the value of your car. But also think that in case of third-party insurance, the damage to your car will not be taken into account if you are responsible for the accident. Photo DR

What is third party insurance?

Let’s go back to the basics. If a claim occurs, the third-party contract only covers the damage suffered by the third party, without ever participating in your compensation if you are responsible.

On the other hand, the third party insured victim of an accident will be compensated by the car insurance of the person responsible for the accident. The third-party contract is suitable for certain motorist profiles: owners of an old car with a low value, those who drive infrequently, young drivers and small budgets.

What is the extended third?

Third party plus, extended third party, improved third party or even third party comfort, it is a formula which offers additional guarantees compared to “third party” car insurance without going as far as “all risks” coverage.

An offer which therefore aims to compromise between price and guarantees to meet the needs of certain motorists; depending on the insurers (conventional or mutual), the guarantees in addition to civil liability most often include the driver’s bodily protection, fire, natural disasters. The theft guarantee is not systematic.

Important optional guarantees

The “driver’s personal guarantee” allows you to be covered in the event of bodily injury suffered during an accident at fault or without an identified third party. The “collision damage” guarantee reimburses the damage caused to the vehicle in the event of a collision with another car, a pedestrian or an animal. In each case, the owner of the vehicle concerned, the pedestrian or the animal must be identified.

Otherwise, no support. The “theft-fire” guarantee compensates theft, destruction by fire. Compensation is most often based on the value at the time of the claim.

Other useful guarantees

The “glass breakage” guarantee will be used in the event of damage to the windshield. If the insurance contract so provides, this cover can be extended to the side, rear and roof windows as well as to the headlamps or exterior mirrors. The “legal protection” guarantee can be used if you are involved in proceedings in the context of a claim.

You will be defended by your insurer, who will be able to cover the expert’s costs or the lawyer’s fees. Note, in the event of taking out damage guarantees (theft, fire, collision damage, etc.), the vehicle is covered for the risks of “natural disasters”, “storms” and “attacks”.
