Pyrénées-Orientales: the Covid is back under its Deltacron variant, more than 18% of positive cases detected out of 4,500 PCR tests

The Covid seems to be making a new push in the world, in Europe and in France as in the Pyrénées-Orientales. This Tuesday, June 14, 2022, the incidence rate rose in the Pyrénées-Orientales to 307 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Down with the Omicron, make way for the Deltacron. This new mutation, with variants scientifically baptized L452R and K417N, has appeared and has become the majority in the last three weeks in the department, leading to a surge in contamination. Covid more contagious than its predecessors, this coronavirus thus again places the department under surveillance. This June 14, lists the Occitanie Regional Health Agency, 307 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded, while hospitalizations unfortunately returned to tarnish the local epidemiological picture.

Benoît Marnet, president of the Inovie Biopole 66 laboratories confirms the push.

Benoît Marnet, president of the independent private laboratory Inovie Biopole 66, confirms this. Already last week, the Biopole-Médilab group had carried out more than 4,500 RT-PCR tests for a positivity rate of 18.3%. A 52% Sars-Cov-2 rebound linked to Deltacron. “It seems more aggressive than Omicron, but let’s not be alarmist. It’s a little early to talk about pre-new wave, even if we see that infections are increasing all over the world and in Europe where Portugal and Germany are particularly affected”, analyzes the expert biologist. Vigilant about this almost unexpected resumption of the Covid.

52% Deltacron mutation

“However, the situation is not totally surprising, people have given up wearing masks and no longer respect barrier gestures”, regrets Benoît Marnet, calling on the vaccinated or unvaccinated population to be tested for the slightest symptoms of rhinitis, fever, body aches, cough. And double the test. “In the event of a positive antigen, it is essential to do an RT-PCR in the laboratory in order to screen for the mutation”he advises, almost worried about the rapid circulation of the two variants in a season when air conditioning obliges, we ventilate the rooms less or even no more at all.

Faced with this resurgence of positivity, private medical biology laboratories have also decided to maintain a substantial screening system. Until August 31, in addition to the city laboratories, the cultural centers of Cabestany and Toulouges as well as a tent set up in the parking lot of the Perpignan exhibition center remain open to welcome the public for all RT-PCR tests.
