The BA.2 sub-lineage is largely in the majority in France. It accounts for 92% of positive tests as of April 7. This subvariant is more contagious than Omicron. How did BA.2 manage to establish itself so quickly? What are the symptoms ?

BA.2 imposed itself in a few weeks

the variant BA.2 crushed its “big brother” Omicron (also called BA.1) which has been circulating mainly since the end of 2021 in France. “BA.2 is therefore not considered as a distinct variant but as included in the Omicron variant” specifies Santé Publique France. “The progression of BA.2 to the detriment of BA.1 is observed throughout the metropolitan territory” adds the health agency.

“BA.2 is the most contagious variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus”

BA.2 “is the most contagious variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that we have seen so far”, alerted Maria Van Kerkhove of the WHO, on March 19. A very contagious variant but – fortunately – less severe. Indeed, Public Health France reports a risk of hospitalization and admission to intensive care up to 80% lower than with the other variants like Delta or Alpha.

What are the symptoms of the BA.2 variant?

Symptoms of the BA.2 subvariant are close to those of Omicron. These are: severe fatigue; cough ; fever ; headaches, muscle aches or body aches; sore throat ; runny nose ; nausea and vomiting. On the other hand, Omicron and BA.2 cause little loss of smell or taste as was the case with the first variants in 2020.
