From optional, it has almost become compulsory with the Covid-19: pay attention to travel insurance which covers your health expenses when you are abroad and which is now required in nearly 40 countries, including tourist destinations favorites of the French (like Thailand, Costa Rica and Cuba…).
Before the health crisis, presenting such travel insurance was an exception, it was only requested in six countries, explains Le Figaro, namely China, Russia, Cuba, Algeria, Mongolia and Saudi Arabia. From now on, it has become almost the rule, because the States want to make sure that they will not have to bear the costs generated by the care, the quarantine or even the repatriation of travelers who would contract the Covid-19 on their soil.
Africa and Europe
The countries that now require a Covid-stamped travel insurance certificate are, for Africa: Algeria, Benin, Cape Verde, Djibouti, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Togo and l ‘Mauritius Island. In Europe, Ukraine and Russia require such a certificate.
South and Central America and Asia
In South and Central America, Aruba, Argentina, Bahamas, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Paraguay, Saint Martin (Dutch part) and the Turks and Caicos Islands are concerned. For Asia, Saudi Arabia, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and finally the Thailand require the presentation of such insurance before entering their soil.
Credit card travel insurance
The requirements differ depending on the countries visited. Some countries require tourists or visitors to present “Covid-19 travel insurance” before entering their territory, sometimes with the mention that health costs in the event of Covid are well covered. Good to know: most credit card travel insurance covers medical expenses in the event of an epidemic! It is therefore sufficient to expressly ask your bank for this statement before issuing the certificate.
For other countries, it is a minimum amount of support that must be mentioned. Argentina, for example, asks that your accommodation costs be covered up to 2,000 dollars, against 50,000 dollars for Cambodia, and 100,000 dollars for Thailand, specifies Le Figaro.
Read the general insurance conditions
Questioned by Le Figaro, David Dumont, president of Insurly, a travel insurance comparator, advises to carefully read the “extension of stay” and “impossible return” clauses of the general insurance conditions which list the guarantees of insurers in the event of Covid during your trip. They can range from paying for additional accommodation to paying for a return flight, and psychological support, says the specialist.

Finally, be aware that depending on your age and your profile, you may encounter difficulties in taking out such insurance, because certain contracts stop after 65, 72 or 75 years, specifies David Dumont, questioned by our colleagues from Figaro . You can take out such insurance until the day before your departure, and in general, you can check on the government website if the destination you want to go to requires this Covid-19 insurance.
