wild animal trafficking judged this Friday in Charleville-Mézières

In this case, no less than 12 animal defense associations have brought civil action, in particular the La Tanière refuge, where the seized animals had been moved as soon as the pot of roses was discovered in May 2020. This Friday morning, from 9 am, three defendants including a veterinarian and two alleged traffickers, one for whom the recidivism was retained, will therefore be tried in Charleville-Mézières for trafficking in wild animals, their detention being strictly regulated.

The case dates back to May 2020 when a serval was discovered in an apartment in the Ardennes, after a report from neighbors. The Charleville-Mézières prosecutor’s office had opened an investigation to try to trace the chain. It resulted, a few weeks later, in the arrest of the organizer of the network who bought protected species in the Netherlands before reselling them between 4,500 euros and 8,000 euros in France with the help of an accomplice . On November 30, 2021, two traffickers, a veterinarian and five wild animal owners, were arrested. The Charleville-Mézières veterinarian is suspected of laundering the pedigree of animals and generating false certificates. The serval could easily pass for a cat, but was identified by specialists thanks to its ears.

A trial scheduled for the whole day

Tried on December 3, 2021 in immediate appearance, the three Ardennes defendants, including one from Sedan, had requested a delay to prepare their defense as the code of criminal procedure provides for. On January 8, 2022, they were again summoned to the bar of the Charleville-Mézières judicial court, but a second delay had been requested, this time by the lawyer for the order of veterinarians due to an additional investigation.

The trial was therefore heard this Friday for the whole day because of the number of lawyers, with three defendants at the bar placed under judicial supervision. For his part, a time prohibited from exercising, the veterinarian obtained the authorization to practice certain acts except that of identifying the animals.
